In a meeting of Relief and Rehabilitation Committee, Ta’awun Trust have decided to purchase the above mentioned land (1.35) Acre and constructed 70 New Houses for most affected families of village Kotakuppam. The meeting presided by the Chairman of Ta'awun Trust.

Ta'awun Trust have decided to rehabilitate Tsunami survivors of KOTAKUPPAM.

About village Geography of Kottakuppam

Kottakuppam is a predominantly Muslim village situated in the East Coast Road, bordering the City of Pondicherry. It falls in the district of Villupuram in the State of TamilNadu and is categorised as a Special Village Panchayat. The habitations here started some 300 years back presumably. The Jumma Mosque here was built by the Nawab of Arcot during the mid 19th century. The Muslim community live in a serene atmosphere, and enjoy a good rapport with other non-muslim communities living in adjacent areas. The Muslim area runs around a radius of one kilometre and the population is around 30000. As per the general tendency, Muslims prefer this hamlet, where they can reside in a Muslim atmosphere and the proximity of the city of Pondicherry and the accessibility to its facilities has added to the craze Hence the land cost has escalated alarmingly. Further the concentration of population has been instrumental in the non-hygenic, below-par living conditions prevailing here.
The climate is tropical and the rainfall is below average. The cultivable area has dropped drastically because of horizontal expansion and has dealt a serious blow in the general economy. The ground water level has gone a further 15 feet deep during the last 12 years. Sea erosion has been a regular phenomena for the past 5 years and some 500 families are rendered homeless. Property worth more than Rupees two crores were washed away by the sea. In this backdrop the people are yet again ravaged by the ferocity of sea, uner the disguise of Tsunami.

Socio-Economic Condition of Muslims

In olden days, Muslims here were usually associated with agriculture, cigar industry and weaving. A few people were established in the South-east Asian countries and generally the public welfare of this village revolved round these people. Apart from these elites the economic condition provided nothing to boast off. This conditions had a serious impact in the fields of education, health, women empowerment etc., The situation turned to the good with the advent of employment opportunities in the Gulf, which somewhat opened the shutters of fund flow, if not the flood of wealth. However, a large number of these expatriates have sought employment in the class four category. Therefore there is still wide trenches in the path of development, which of late has necessitated a serious view.
